. Welcome to The Cartoon Theater...Series 1.
The Cartoon Theater is a library of PCX format, graphic file templates
containing over 1,200 separate drawing elements of cartoon characters,
head positions, body positions, props, and the necessary tools to help you
create a library of files of your own creations.
The Cartoon Theater has no installation utility and the files are not
compressed. In this way it is entirely up to the user as to where to store
this library of files. It is suggested that you make a subdirectory under
the directory that contains the paint program you will use to manipulate
these files.
For example; If you have a paint program under a directory such as
C:\PBRUSH. You may wish to store these files in that directory under a
subdirectory called THEATER...to do this;
1. At the DOS prompt C:\> type cd\pbrush ( then push enter ).
2. At the DOS prompt C:\PBRUSH> type md\theater (then push enter).
3. At the DOS prompt C:\PBRUSH> cd\pbrush\theater (then push enter).
4. At the DOS prompt (C:\PBRUSH\THEATER>) type copy a:*.* (enter).
... Of coarse your drive letter and directory name may differ
but the basic format remains the same. The basic idea is that it is best
to store these files out of the way on their own subdirectory under the
paintbrush programs directory that you will be using them with.
Be sure to make backup copies of your original Cartoon Theater disks
and set your original Cartoon Theater disks aside for safe keeping. If you
are unfamiliar with how to make back up copies of your original disks,
please refer to the Dos manual or Computer User's Guide that came with
your system.
. The Cartoon Theater - Series 1 is a basic block style of cartooning.
The original body design is accomplished by combining a series of squares
and rectangles. Future series of the Cartoon Theater will highlight other
popular styles of cartooning. Unlike any other " HOW TO " type of
cartooning program on the market to date, The Cartoon Theater provides
the user with total access to the utilities necessary to fully understand
head positioning, size coordination and the one dimensional perspective
concepts involved with the art of cartooning.
The versatility of the Cartoon Theater is only limited by your
imagination. Each individual user can add to this library of files by
creating new characters, new body positions, props, page layouts, etc.
The registered user of the Cartoon Theater is granted full
permission to alter, manipulate or use as is any of the features of the
Cartoon Theater in any manner they wish. The registered user may publish,
sell or distribute freely any of the creations that were the result of the
use of the Cartoon Theater. However, no one is granted the permission to
make copies of the registered user's version of the Cartoon Theater for
distribution, publication or sale without the expressed written permission
from the author of the Cartoon Theater.
. PC user's, user groups, clubs and BBS's are encouraged to copy and
distribute the shareware version of the Cartoon Theater Series-1 with it's
documentation intact with the following limitations...
1. The Cartoon Theater logo must remain unchanged.
2. The file THEATER1.DOC (this file) must be present on the
distribution disk.
. 3. No fees should be charged.

. HOW TO USE THE CARTOON THEATER...
A cartoonist is a producer, director and playwright all rolled into
one. The cartoonist sets the stage, designs the costumes and scenery,
chooses the cast of characters, writes the script and produces the finished
work. The Cartoon Theater provides literally hundreds of separate drawing
elements to help make this all possible.
Only four head positions are shown for each character. You can flip
the 3/4 and side views of the character's head positions to instantly
achieve two more head positions for each of the characters. Be sure to
pay close attention to the direction and size of the collar to match your
chosen head position. You could use a collar pointing in the opposite direction
to achieve a " looking over the shoulder" effect.
Likewise, you can manipulate any of the separate drawing elements
in this way, such as body positions, props, etc. The page layouts included
with The Cartoon Theater offer the user with even more versatility.
. Due to the many variations of printer configurations involved, it is
the responsibility of the individual user to achieve the desired result when
sending work to the printer. On the page layouts, whenever possible,
dimensions are given as a point of reference to be used as a guide to help
the user achieve the desired result when printing.
When using the page layouts take note of the following tips....
1. All files were original created in 640 x 200 CGA screen size mode,
(except for the greeting card layout in the registered user's
version which is 640 x 400 ).
2. Be sure to remove all dimensions and instructions from the page
layout before sending work to the printer.
3. Be sure to replace titles with titles of your own creation and
don't forget to add your own initials on the lower right hand
corner after the copyright symbol.
4. The single panel, 3-panel and 4-panel newspaper comic strip
layouts and the sign page layouts were originally designed for
landscape orientation printing. This may not be necessary
depending on your particular printer configuration and the
computer paint program you use to manipulate the Cartoon Theater.
. OTHER TIPS... When bringing separate elements together, such as a
character's head, a collar, a body and some props, some things will overlap
others and the pixels will have to be cleaned up. For example...whenever
you attach a head and a collar to a body, the shoulder line will have to be
erased. ( see sample-1.pcx). Likewise, if you add furniture, some of it is
bound to be blocked from view. If the part that is supposed to be blocked
from view is showing through a pant leg or other object, the pixels will
have to be cleaned up.
And don't forget...the names used to identify the cartoon
characters are arbitrary names and you may change them as you see fit. A
painstaking effort has been taken to label files so that they can be
identified by their titles. You may change these titles or names to anything
you'd like.
ALSO...The files contained in the Cartoon Theater Series-1 can be
printed out on your printer and used as stencils on a light table to
produce high quality, pen and ink, camera ready artwork for a more
professional approach.
